How Much Do Consumers Utilize Emerging Technology: ChatGPT

What we’re seeing

One of the most exciting product launches of 2023 was ChatGPT, a generative artificial intelligence (AI)-driven chatbot. ChatGPT was developed by OpenAI, and followed the launch of OpenAI’s DALL-E, a generative AI-driven image creation tool.  Both products are available for free on a limited basis, but paid subscriptions provide consumers access to the latest versions and remove usage restrictions.

DALL-E, which launched in 2021, drove a small number of subscriptions for OpenAI, but the launch of ChatGPT created a surge of 5.5x more new subscribers in the spring of 2023 with steady and meaningful month over month growth following through the end of the year. DALL-E, as an image generator, perhaps was more of an amazing novelty but ChatGPT and its ability to answer nearly any question seems to have more utility for paid users in the market.
